HOW TO I.D. A CHESTNUT IN THE NESTBOX:
At Birth: Chestnuts will be black with pink underbellies and pink inside of the ears.
At 2 Weeks: Chestnuts will develop ticking, as well as white ear, eye, and nose lacing. The nape of the neck develops into a rich orange color
At 6 Weeks: The surface color is a rich Chestnut brown, ticked with jet black tipped guard hairs. The intermediate band is orange banded on medium brown over a dark slate-blue undercoat. The nape of theneck is orange. Ears have both black and white lacing. Eyes are brown. Color looks like that of a typical wild, cottontail rabbit.

Chinchlla
HOW TO I.D. A CHINCHILLA IN THE NESTBOX:
Chinchillas are born looking nearly identical to Chesnuts. They have pink underbellies and ears, that soon develop white lacing. Chinchillas however lack the gold coloring that develops in the rings of the chestnut as well as the tan triangle at the base of the neck. That coloration will be replaced by a silver triangle at the base of the neck and silvering throughout the rings around 2-3 weeks of age.
